FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—July 27, 2020; Santa Fe, NM: The world’s oldest and most prestigious juried Native art market is now the world’s newest virtual Native art market. Approximately 450 Native artists from around the United States and Canada are participating in the first-ever Virtual Indian Market (VIM), which begins August 1 through August 31, 2020 at http://www.swaia.org.

Recently appointed Executive Director Kim Peone (Colville Confederated Tribes / Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) is taking Southwestern Association for Indian Arts beyond the annual Santa Fe Indian Market: implementing a new and complimentary business model featuring free, online commerce for Native artists with the debut of the virtual Native art market. SWAIA contracted project management and technical support partners the Clark Hulings Fund and Artspan to help produce this ambitious program.

“The Virtual Indian Market is about culture: culture preserved by art. We are pivoting to a digital platform to bring Native art to a worldwide audience,” says Peone.

SWAIA and the Santa Fe Indian Market, alongside technical partner Free Agent Source Inc., is embracing virtual reality in a 3-D computer-simulated, online world (NDN World) where artists, visitors and collectors will encounter Native or non-Native avatars to enjoy and interact at the Virtual Indian Market Gala and the Virtual Awards Announcements.

“It an opportunity for users to experience a cross-cultural reference,“ says Peone.
