SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Vircadia is a 3D virtual platform which requires computer processing comparable to that of video games. Here are system requirements.

Operating System:
Windows 10, 64-bit
MacOS High Sierra (10.13) or newer
Ubuntu 18.04 64 bit or any other modern Linux distribution

Processor:
Dual-Core minimum

System Memory:
8GB minimum
8GB+ recommended

How old is your computer?
Early trials have shown, most people with a laptop or desktop computer (Windows or Mac) purchased in the last 3-4 years, can run Vircadia software smoothly. Computers older than 3-4 years may be able to run it, but movement in NDN World may not be smooth and sound may not be clear. The best way to determine if your computer can run it is to simply install and try it.

Graphics Processor recommended (but not required)
gaming computer (Windows 10 PC) with a separate graphics processor is recommended, but not required.

Many Apple Computer models also have a separate graphics processor: MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro. If you have a MacBook Air it may work but performance could be slower.

FOR FASTER PERFORMANCE, close all other apps when running Vircadia
If your computer is running slow, try closing all other apps before launching Vircadia.

HEADSET RECOMMENDED for better sound and to eliminate “echo”
Talking with others in NDN World is similar to using your phone, Skype, Zoom and FaceTime. Using a headset can improve your experience and also how well others hear you.

MINIMUM NETWORK SPEED
Minimum download speed is approximately 10Mbps (megabits per second). Definition here: https://help.speedtest.net/hc/en-us/articles/360039162713-What-do-mbps-and-kbps-mean-

To check your internet speed, open this speed test web page in your browser and click “go”. https://www.speedtest.net/
It will give two results from the speed test in Mbps (megabits per second):
  • download speed
  • upload speed
It is normal for some internet services to have faster download and slower upload. Download speed is more important. A download speed of 10-20 Mbps is good enough. In large cities, it is common to have 50-100 Mbps. If your download speed is 5 Mbps or less, you will likely experience significant “lag” while in NDN World, making it nearly impossible to move around. If your download speed is between 5 and 10 Mbps, you may be able to move around, talk, listen in Vircadia, but it may not be smooth. Above 10 Mbps your experience should be good enough. Above 20 Mbps you should have a smooth experience.
